Tips & Tricks for Getting Your Cat into a Carrier
We know that getting your cat into a carrier can sometimes feel like a battle of wits. Here are some tried-and-true ways to make the process smoother for both of you:
1. Keep the Carrier Out All the Time
Instead of only bringing the carrier out right before a trip, please leave it in a cozy corner year-round. Add a soft blanket or bed so it becomes a familiar, safe spot — not a “scary box” that only appears before a vet or grooming visit.
2. Make it Smell Like Home
Line the carrier with a blanket or towel that smells like your cat’s favorite nap spot. Familiar scents can help ease stress. You can also use a feline pheromone spray (like Feliway®) about 15 minutes before use.
3. Use Treats and Play
Encourage your cat to explore the carrier by tossing treats or toys inside. Make it a fun, rewarding place to be instead of a signal that something unpleasant is coming.
4. The “Back-In” Technique
If your cat is reluctant, try gently picking them up and backing them into the carrier rear-end first. Many cats resist less when they can’t see where they’re going.
5. Try a Top-Loading Carrier
Some cats are easier to lower into a top-opening carrier rather than being coaxed in from the front.
6. Stay Calm and Positive
Cats pick up on our energy. Use a calm voice, move slowly, and avoid turning the process into a chase. Patience pays off!
7. Reward Afterwards
Once your cat is inside, give them praise, a favorite treat, or extra snuggles after the trip. Over time, they’ll associate the carrier with positive experiences.
